General Materials closing its doors after nearly 70 years in business

JACKSON, MI – General Materials is closing its doors after 69 years in business.

The Jackson lumber company is set to close in November as its owner retires and the facility at 2995 Brooklyn Road is sold to Amerhart, a Green Bay, Wisconsin-based lumber distributor. With the purchase, Amerhart also will hire the General Materials staff, officials said.

“We are grateful to the Jackson community for its nearly seven decades of support,” General Materials President Andrew Woell said in a statement. “As family-owned businesses, Amerhart and General Materials share similar values. I believe this transition in one that is beneficial for all parties involved. We wish the best for our employees and their new employer.”
