I am very proud of Councilmember Sandy Brown for standing up to the neoliberal status quo majority on council and blocking this regressive sales tax increase in order to negotiate some benefits for the working class of this town.
According to the organized capitalist class who stand firmly behind the majority of council members, the only permissible way to fund new projects in one of the most unequal cities on Earth is through regressive tax policy, not progressive tax policy. According to this same local ruling class, who are used to getting whatever they want, all city funds must be entirely subsumed by top-level staff positions, the police, gentrification consultants, and massively underfunded garages no one wants.
I’d like to see more like Brown, who is standing up to the business interests and real estate lobbies that usually run roughshod over local government.
