Soquel businesses express discontent over ‘no parking’ curb, county cites safety issues – Santa Cruz Sentinel

SOQUEL – A string of antique store owners in Soquel are frustrated with Santa Cruz County officials as business continues to be impacted by recent infrastructure decisions.

County workers painted the curb along Soquel Drive between Center and Main streets red to designate it as a “no parking” curb. The work was completed July 13, and shops along the stretch said it has affected business.

“We don’t get the drop by traffic like we were getting,” said Dan Simpson, owner of Hall’s Surrey House Antiques. “People would park in front and visit the shops. That’s not happening, right now.”

That stretch of Soquel Drive has few off-street parking opportunities. Parking lots, while scarce, are usually small and shared between multiple businesses and in some cases, the lot is shared with tenants of apartments above the stores. The conundrum limits parking in the lots, Simpson said.
