Rising Covid Cases Put the Economic Recovery at Risk

Covid-19 cases have been creeping upward in the U.S. since the July Fourth holiday, but it was only this past week that it became clear that the Delta variant had shown up to crash the summer party.

The average number of new Covid-19 cases each day in the U.S. is still low compared with earlier phases of the pandemic, but it is up more than 180% compared with two weeks ago. While some regions have been hit harder than others, cases have at least doubled in all but a small handful of states, according to data from the New York Times.

With the arrival of a new wave of the pandemic, prospects for a near-term economic recovery seem as if they might be in danger of slipping away. Stocks fell sharply on Monday, then rebounded as investors seemed to brush off worries that consumers might shut themselves back up in their apartments.
