One of our team members had just returned from a rejuvenating vacation when a phone call came in that might have otherwise set her on edge. Instead, her response could have made for a master class in graceful de-escalation. When I think about the value of recharging, this is the moment that springs to mind.
When employees have a chance to fully recharge, it benefits them as human beings—which is a valid goal in and of itself. As the holidays approach, it’s time to call attention to the fact that recharging is also a business necessity.
When our batteries are running low, we’re more likely to perceive a “level 5” issue as a “level 10” issue. When we escalate our response accordingly, perception becomes reality and the issue grows bigger than it needs to be.
