10-year-old Mill Valley entrepreneur starts fizzy business

To make a little extra change, some kids have lemonade stands. Others put on bake sales. Ten-year-old Zane Mathews is in the business of bubbles. With help from his parents, Heather and Scott Mathews, the incoming sixth-grader at Mill Valley Middle School has spent the last few months refilling and delivering canisters of food-grade CO2 for people’s SodaStreams in his Mill Valley community.

With the help of Nextdoor and word-of-mouth, his self-described “fizzy business” has taken off, allowing him to purchase equipment, get a Star Wars-themed Lego set as well as learn about saving and donate to Oakland-based Hopalong Animal Rescue and cheetah preservation efforts in Africa.

Since he started, he’s delivered the canisters to more than 40 households — many repeat customers — for $9 per canister. Although he’s only focused on Mill Valley for now, there’s talks to expand to Tiburon in the future.
