A ‘Cheers’ gym: San Antonio native’s growing gym business aims to be friendly

After being laid off a fourth time, Shawn Phillips decided to leave corporate America and start his own business.

Wanting to reconnect with lifelong passions for fitness and helping people, in 2018 he launched Texas Muscle and Fitness near West Loop 1604 and Braun Road.

Like a good workout, the journey since hasn’t been easy. But Phillips, who’s 43, credits vision, persistence, patience and lots of hard work for the success he’s found in the gym business.

The San Antonio native, who grew up in the 1990s in the Sutton Homes neighborhood off Walters and Interstate 35, has never shied from challenges. He attributes that trait to the impact of YMCA youth basketball coach Donny Miller and Fox Tech High School basketball coach Gerardo Marquez.
