Akron to create 200 Black-owned business by 2030

AKRON, Ohio – Akron is one of 50 “Champion Cities” selected as finalists in Bloomberg Philanthropies’ first Global Mayors Challenge.

As a Champion City chosen out of more than 600 cities around the world, Akron will establish a program to help launch 200 new Black-owned businesses by 2030, Mayor Dan Horrigan said.

• Akron was selected out of more than 600 cities that entered Bloomberg’s global Mayors Challenge
• Fifteen cities will each win $1 million along with Bloomberg’s support over the next few years to implement their ideas
• Akron proposed the THRIVE program with the goal to create 500 Black-owned businesses by 2030
• The THRIVE program will use a “medical rounds” model, assigning mentors to the entrepreneurs and working with partners
