Contractual obligations forced Cognizant Technology Solutions to pay former Chief Legal Officer Steven E. Schwartz’s legal fees after the CLO found himself indicted by the Department of Justice, but now Cognizant is suing Schwartz’s attorney for $20 million, alleging fraudulent billing practices.
In a complaint filed Wednesday in New York federal court, Cognizant alleged that Jeremy I. Bohrer and his six-lawyer firm in New York, Bohrer PLLC, billed Schwartz for performing “the same task over and over” and encouraged “churning”—the practice of multiple attorneys performing duplicative tasks to increase the firm’s billing.
