CASTILE — Well-known in the community as a U-Pick Farm, Pankow U-Pick Apple Orchards at 5878 Glen Iris Rd. has been serving the community delicious apples for decades.
Apple selections include Cortland, Empire, Mc Intosh, Ida, Red, Monroe, Northern Spy, and Red Delicious apples. Having seen their friends, The Pankow Family, operate a successful dairy and U-Pick business since the 1970s, Dave and Holly Momberger, recently embarked on a new endeavor as they opened Buried Barrel Hard Cider, a farm cidery, at 6517 Denton Corners Rd.
Buried Barrel makes hard cider from apples grown exclusively at Pankow Apple Orchards.
Dave, who is semi-retired from running a grape juice cooperative in Chautauqua County, wanted to come up with a creative way to help the Pankow family sustain business, with primary focus on the U-Pick aspect of operations.
