A fire sparked inside an underground electrical vault forced the evacuation of dozens of businesses and homes, causing heavy traffic congestion in the area on Friday evening, officials said.
South Lake Avenue, a main city street, was closed to traffic from California Boulevard to San Pasqual Streets as fire authorities waited for utility workers to shut off power in the area, said Lisa Derderian, Pasadena city spokeswoman. Smoke could be seen rising from the vault in front of several clothing stores and restaurants.
There was no damage to buildings and no injuries were reported, Derderian said.
The blaze was reported to authorities at 6:15 p.m. as the fire ignited underground in front of 528 South Lake Avenue, officials said. A total of 24 addresses were evacuated, including businesses and homes. The block houses several large department stores like Macy’s and TJ Maxx.
