Helping businesses attract employees to the workforce following the pandemic

In a recent survey of the members of the Small Business Association of Michigan, 47% of respondents cited “difficulty finding and keeping employees” as their top concern. When asked what type of assistance would be most helpful, 58% of the respondents answered “assistance finding employees.”

Michigan’s workforce has shrunk. While the economy is improving, our recovery is being hindered by a lack of available employees — a complex problem with many challenges. The state is doing a good job of expanding access to post-secondary education and upskill opportunities for workers, but there are other immediate policy changes needed.

While employers are substantially increasing wages and benefits to attract more employees, there are two actions our state could take that would improve our economic future, especially if taken in tandem:
