During the COVID pandemic, individuals, businesses and local governments have looked to Washington for aid, and the federal government responded in unprecedented ways. Through the American Recovery Act and the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which provided “forgivable” loans to small business owners to help them survive, legislators and two President Trump and Biden responded.
Americans from across the political spectrum needed aid, and the government helped them. Providing safety and security are part of why we have governments in the first place, and generally, there were relatively few voices arguing against helping families and business owners who clearly were trying to survive through unprecedented times. The pandemic resulted in the permanent closure of three-in-ten small companies. Had the government not stepped in to offer financial assistance, countless more businesses would have closed their doors forever.
