‘I think my tears have slowed down.’ Business owners face rebuilding after devastating eight-alarm Brighton fire

The blaze gutted the building, which had served as home for decades to several businesses, including a music school, a dance academy, and a recording studio.

In separate interviews Saturday, Bob Brenner, owner of Music Maker Studios, a music school, and Erin Washington, co-owner of the Brookline Academy of Dance, said they had believed they were overcoming the hurdle of the pandemic when the fire struck.

“We were making it work … and then this happens,” Washington said. “It’s like another blow, it’s heartbreaking.”

Brenner and Washington each described going to the scene and watching firefighters battle the blaze.

“They just couldn’t get the fire down; it kept burning,” said Brenner, who praised the firefighters. “I was in shock.”
