Michigan businesses weather lockdowns, surge of interest in great outdoors

Wellston-based Pine River Paddlesports Center was preparing for a slump when the pandemic hit last year. To the kayak and canoe rental provider’s surprise, business “skyrocketed,” said Alaney Miltner, who runs the company with her husband, Jacob Miltner. The 2021 season is shaping up to be their best year yet.

“People are just really excited to be outside and to be able to do things,” said Miltner. “They’re feeling unlocked.”

Revenue jumped by 30 percent last season compared to 2019, she said. This June, sales are up 10 percent compared to the same time year despite severe wet weather earlier in the month, which dampened sales. The company has also been selling out dates for months in advance and at a faster pace compared to previous years.

Other countries have begun to open up to vaccinated U.S. travelers, but Miltner predicts lingering hesitations about health and safety will keep a significant amount of tourism dollars stateside. Milter reports…
