Nearing the 70% threshold of vaccinated Oregonians and the lifting of statewide restrictions harming the hospitality sector is welcome news and worth celebration. However, economic recovery will take years for businesses that have had to limit occupancy for the past 16 months.
Closures and restrictions due to COVID-19 have had a devastating impact on Oregon’s breweries and hospitality sector. Thousands of jobs were lost and many more would have been if lawmakers had raised taxes on these local businesses.
With business models flipped upside down, it will take years for businesses to economically recover. Deschutes Brewery will bounce back, but I worry about smaller business owners who invested their hard-earned money to start a business that hasn’t been able to successfully operate. Many breweries, tasting rooms, pubs and restaurants did not generate enough income during the pandemic to pay their rent, and they will have a big bill when the eviction…
