Republicans push Michigan to forgive COVID-19-related business fines

Hundreds of Michigan businesses have been fined or had licenses suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic for disobeying health rules. Michigan Republicans want them to be forgiven.

The Senate passed Resolution No. 59 on Thursday, June 10, which urges Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and a pair of state agencies to forgive COVID-19 related business fines. It passed 19-16 along party lines.

Resolutions are non-binding and do not have a direct impact on existing laws, but are frequently used by government bodies as a statement of priorities or to declare intentions.

“Many of these business owners are not lawyers and they were faced with a great challenge when interpreting these rules,” resolution sponsor Sen. Michael MacDonald, R-Macomb Township, said in session on Thursday. “We should not – and I repeat, not – be penalizing individuals for these mistakes during these unprecedented times.”
