There are eight shopping days left until Christmas, and many small businesses are eyeing the calendar nervously. They know that the final week of Christmas shopping is usually the strongest one of the four weeks following Thanksgiving, and they realize that some tardy shoppers still haven’t hit their stores. But this year, apparently, the desire for a strong finish is greater than usual.
A November poll by American Express found that a whopping 78% of small business owners say their holiday sales this year will determine whether they can remain open next year.
Wow. That’s an amazingly high number since most surveys like that show that about a quarter of small-business owners make a calculation like that for Christmas. This survey shows a number three times that rate, and the source of the poll is pretty respectable — American Express.
