Speedway, outdoor economy top news of ’22 | News

The 12-month period that ends at midnight Saturday will be remembered most of all as the year the return of the North Wilkesboro Speedway became a reality.

A sellout crowd of about 9,000 people attended the Window World 125 CARS Late Model Tour race at the speedway on Aug. 31, culminating an initial month-long series of races at the historic venue before millions of dollars of renovations underway there now started.

In April, plans for developing an outdoor economy in Wilkes were unveiled and later endorsed by county and town governing bodies. On Nov. 15, the county commissioners agreed to seek state grants and provide matching funds to develop a park on part of about 80 acres of county-owned Yadkin River bottomland off N.C. 268 East in the Roaring River areas as part of this initiative.
