Tom Sawyer Days boost business for downtown Hannibal

HANNIBAL (WGEM) — National Tom Sawyer’s Days in Hannibal brought hundreds of people to the downtown area which put money back into small businesses that were struggling before.

Downtown business owner Michael Polster said Monday the pandemic was hard for many because there weren’t many tourists shopping or sightseeing so it was a relief to see Tom Sawyer Days draw a lot of people to the city, and into his store.

“I’ve got people from Lake of the Ozarks that come up. So there are people coming here, and Iowa. So there are people coming here for the Tom Sawyer Days because of Mark Twain,” Polster said. “The things that the Jaycees have been doing for years and years, and years. That people just like coming here they feel really good about it.”

Polster said now that tourists are returning he feels downtown will thrive once again.
